What is your #1 tip for photographers when it comes to editing or presenting their portfolios? This tip can be anything you want: what makes a portfolio stand out very strongly to you?

I feel that a presentation of your work whether in print or digital should should show your strongest work, be concise and consistent with your point of view and not be filled with images just for the sake of adding more images. A photographer needs to feel proud of every image they show and be willing to shoot like that for the client they are presenting to.  The presentation and or portfolio should have the client in mind you are showing to and be inspiring and leave the client wanting to see more and stay in touch with you.

What are some common mistakes you see photographers make in their portfolios, and how can these mistakes be fixed?

One common mistake is too many images, another is showing images that you do not want to shoot again and another is apologizing for images whether in a one on one personal showing or in a Zoom and or digital meeting.  Never apologize for your images.  If you are doing that they should not be the images you are showing.  I also feel that the photographer presenting needs to be engaged and ready to discuss the work and have the ability to talk about their process, what they want to shoot and who they are.  It is also is very important to know who you are showing your work to, that person’s history, the magazine, the agency or the brand.  Get engaged!
