Barbara Dawson, director of the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin @thehughlane, invited Perry Ogden to discuss the life and the legacy of Peter Beard and his life-long friendship with Francis Bacon. You can listen now to the podcast here.
Peter Beard was an American artist, photographer, diarist, and writer who lived and worked in New York City, Montauk and Kenya. His photographs of Africa, African animals and the journals that often integrated his photographs, have been widely shown and published since the 1960s.
Back in the late 90’s, Barbara asked Perry Ogden to photograph Francis Bacon’s studio at 7 Reece Mews in London before it was taken apart and moved to the Hugh Lane. Perry was fascinated to see so many Peter Beard works scattered about the floor of the studio. Later in 2009, Perry Ogden met Peter Beard when he came to Dublin for the Francis Bacon centenary exhibition at the Hugh Lane and they appeared on a radio show together.
Francis Bacon painted nine major portraits of Beard and myriad others inspired by his facial structure.
Please enjoy this selection of pictures from the more than 200 prints, contact sheets, letters and other items found in the studio.
