This image from 2020 was captured by Spencer Lowell for the MIT Technology Review’s profile of David Masten of Masten Space Systems. Recently, this image was used for a Bloomberg article on the company’s state.
Masten Space Systems was founded by David Masten, who dreamed of creating reusable space crafts. His scientific incubator in the Mojave desert gained the attention of tech giants such as Elon Musk and NASA. Masten paved the way for the commercial space industry boom of today. Space X, Blue Origin, rocket lab, and more owe their success to Masten’s dreams.
In recent months Masten has run into many issues and has filed for bankruptcy, but their legacy is felt throughout the industry. As many as 250 former Masten employees and interns are scattered throughout other New Space companies.
